Let's go to Jeju Island on the metaverse for vacation

[Experience Story] "Let's go to Jeju Island on the metaverse for vacation this summer!"

Metaverse platform ZEPETO provides various virtual spaces related
to Jeju Island. Famous tourist attractions in Jeju such as Seongsan Ilchulbong, Yongmeori Coast, and Soesokkak have been implemented , and
features of Jeju attractions such as Hamel ships and the sandstone rock walls of Yongmeori Coast have been revived
to realistically implement ticket offices and tourist information boards… 'Tourist Atmosphere'
Metaverse replaces travel experience and time, paying attention to a new tourism paradigm

The full-fledged summer vacation season has returned, but as the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) re-spreads, more and more citizens are thinking about vacation spots. The metaverse virtual space is emerging as a new vacation destination as a travel destination without concerns about infectious diseases and time and space restrictions. With the appearance of a metaverse set in Jeju Island, I experienced a special summer vacation in a virtual world.

Shall we visit Seongsan Ilchulbong in the virtual space of 'Metaverse in Jeju'?

Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak (oreum formed by the eruption of lava from the water) has long been selected as the first among the Ten Views of Yeongju due to its outstanding scenery. When I searched Jeju Island for Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak located in Jeju Island, I was able to easily find Jeju’s representative tourist attractions such as Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, Soesokkak Beach, and Yongmeori Coast. How is Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak in the metaverse realized? Upon entering Seongsan Ilchulbong World, the cherry blossoms of Jeju Island in full bloom caught our attention at once.

Dolhareubang, where you can feel the feeling of Jeju Island, and welcome architectural phrases that read 'HELLO' can be found here and there. With the bright yellow rapeseed flowers in the background, the windmill rotates, giving you the feeling of being on vacation. As I entered the cafe near Seongsan Ilchulbong along the road, the scenery of Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak and rapeseed flowers embroidered on the stone wall was spectacular.
In the metaverse, instead of the stairs installed to actually tour the summit of Seongsan Ilchulbong, it was implemented in the form of a game where you climb to the end by jumping. Jumping up the stairs was more difficult than I thought. I gave up climbing to the top of Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak. This time, we went to visit Yongmeori Coast, which is located at the foot of Sanbangsan Mountain. On the way, rape blossoms and Dolhareubang were welcoming tourists. I took a selfie at the attraction and looked around.

When I followed the signs, I saw the vivid image of the sandstone rock walls of Yongmeori Coast, which had been stacked for a long time. Nearby, traces of the wreck of the Dutch ship Hamel were also found. Signs and ticket booths are made to resemble the appearance of Jeju Island, which gives a strange feeling of tourism. It is a figure that draws out the atmosphere of Jeju rather than realism, focusing on the major characteristics of representative tourist destinations.
Then, we went looking for Soesokkak, one of the famous places. In fact, the road leading to Soesokkak from Jeju Island was similarly implemented in the metaverse space. Right next to Soesokkak is Hahyo Black Sand Beach, where you can enjoy riding on traditional sculpture boats 'Taewoo' and 'Kayaking'. The beautiful nature of Jeju, such as beautiful cafes, marinas, and Soesokkak Beach, could also be seen.

Looking around Jeju in the metaverse, there was a bit of a disappointment. Also, compared to the actual Jeju Island, there were still insufficient factors to raise the level of interest in tourism. However, along with the excitement of a space called 'Jeju Island', it seemed clear that it was good content because anyone who has been to Jeju Island can look back on their memories through the metaverse.

As the tourism industry is accelerating its entry into the virtual content business, there is also a forecast that the tourism-type metaverse will increase. If the metaverse can replace the time of travel while reproducing the experience of travel, interest is being drawn whether it will be possible to create a new paradigm of tourism.
